About UPBEAT

About Us

How we think about care, and who provides it—let us tell you a little about ourselves.

The three medical philosophies we value

1. Our dialogue starts
from your cultural perspective

Holding medical licenses in both Japan and the EU does not change a medical “diagnosis.” What it does change is how the conversation begins. We respect the differences in how people describe pain and symptoms and how they think about medication, and we never one-sidedly impose “the Japanese way” on you.

2. We don't just "translate"
—we truly "understand"

Our clinic is not simply a place that “translates” your symptoms from Japanese into another language. We work to deeply “understand” the unspoken anxiety and helplessness that language and cultural barriers can create, and we walk alongside you as your partner.

3. We answer the "why?"
of Japanese healthcare, carefully

How insurance works, when you should call an ambulance, the role of referral letters—we explain the unfamiliar aspects of the Japanese medical system clearly, in everyday language.

Message from the Director

Hello, and welcome. I am Takeshi Sakamoto, Director of UPBEAT International Clinic Nagoya.

Ever since my student days, I held a desire to “become a doctor who can practice anywhere in the world” and to “learn medicine within different cultures and values.” That led me to leave Japan and study at the University of Pécs Medical School in Hungary. Studying medicine in English alongside students from all over the world, immersed in diverse cultures and values, has become a great asset to me—not only as a doctor, but as a person.

At the same time, living abroad, there were many moments when I felt anxious and uncertain about receiving medical care because of differences in language, culture, and healthcare systems. That experience shaped my current philosophy: medicine is not only about curing illness, but also about easing people’s anxiety.

After returning to Japan, I worked in emergency and general medicine, and I also took part in medical volunteer work in Cambodia. Practicing in a medical environment so different from Japan’s reaffirmed for me that, no matter the country or culture, what matters most is being a presence people can turn to with peace of mind.

Through my work with many international families, I met countless people who hesitated to seek care because of differences in language, culture, and the medical system, as well as parents who—caught up in childcare and work—found it hard to visit a clinic at the moment they needed to.

These experiences deepened my wish to create a clinic where anyone, regardless of age or nationality, can turn to us first when they are in trouble—and so I founded UPBEAT International Clinic Nagoya.

At our clinic, whether you are Japanese or from abroad, we value care that respects each person’s background and values, with clear explanations and genuine reassurance. By combining in-person and online consultations, we aim to provide medical care that is easy to reach for busy parents and working professionals alike.

Our goal is not to be a clinic that merely treats illness. We want to be a familiar, trusted presence in your daily life.

Please feel free to reach out about anything, however small. As a partner supporting your health and peace of mind, our entire team is dedicated to caring for you with heart.
